John R. Dunne, former United States Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights under President George H. W. Bush and Deputy Majority Leader of the New York State Senate, is Senior Counsel to the Albany law firm of Whiteman Osterman & Hanna, LLP.
As a Long Island attorney, Mr. Dunne was elected to the N.Y. State Senate and served as Deputy Majority Leader and chaired Senate committees on the judiciary, environment and prisons. As the nation’s chief civil rights counsel, he was responsible for the enforcement of all federal statutes affecting civil rights. Upon his return to Albany, Mr. Dunne was appointed to and chaired the Board of Directors of the New York State Capital Defender Office.
A graduate of Yale Law School, Mr. Dunne is a member of the New York State Bar and United States Supreme Court Bar and has been president of the Nassau County Bar Association and the Nassau County Legal Aid Society where he designed and implemented that county’s plan for 18-b indigent criminal defense.
In 2006, Mr. Dunne received the New York State Bar Association’s Gold Medal for a career of public service and also received the State University of New York School of Criminal Justice Medal for distinguished service. In 2007 he received the Correctional Association of New York’s award for Lifetime Achievement in Public Service.
